NaNoWriMo 2015

It’s that time of year again, when I fool myself into thinking that this is the year I write a book. Yep. It’s time for NaNoWriMo! I’ll be taking another stab at it this year with Things Unknown.

thingsunknownThe daughter of an explorer sets out to prove her father’s sanity after he gets lost at sea during his mission to prove the Loch Ness Monster’s existence.

Day Twenty-Two

Today was the second day of my internship. I like the people I work with, and the company’s small enough that I get to help with interesting projects even though I’m just an intern. I’m even getting used to the soundtrack of the two arguing caged birds my boss keeps in her office.

Day Nineteen

I’ve never had a good relationship with anything I’ve made. My current painting is in a literal time out right now. When my dad came into my room this morning and asked why there was a canvas in the corner with its back to the room, I told him I was “mad at it” as if that were a normal thing to say. He turned it around to look at it, and left with no comment. I guess he’s used to me. I’m mad at my writing too. I’m kind of taking the fact that its not good personally. One can’t rule out the possibility of it having a vendetta against me.

Day Fourteen: A Return to Chaos

I found this picture on my camera roll this morning, and remembered why I took it a second later. I woke up abruptly and was convinced the branches on the trees just outside my window looked like the face of a muppet. I took this picture as “proof.”

Everything is still disorganized here. My sister came to pick out a lamp from the collection on the living room floor. Plumbers showed up as we were running errands, trying to stock the place with laundry baskets and lightbulbs. The water was cut off without warning just as I lathered my hands with the dish soap I’m currently using in my bathroom. I rinsed them off with windex the best I could, which I thought at the time was decent improvisation, but didn’t do much for the stickiness that lingered until the water came back. But despite the disorganization, it is beginning to feel like home.

I had the place to myself this evening, so I got some writing done. I was starting to feel behind, with my word count dropping lower and lower. Anything less than 600 words doesn’t even really contribute to the story line. But I think things are moving again. Even if I can’t resist adding a witch to everything I write.

Day Thirteen:

Dad got home around six and we all walked to dinner, a phenomenon I’m still getting used to. Both seeing my dad before it’s dark outside, and restaurants being in walking distance. So far I’m a fan of both. We sat near a window where I got to enjoy some prime people watching with my pasta.

Day Twelve: Settling In

I don’t remember what I dreamed last night. I don’t think I dreamt at all. I woke up at random intervals to the barking of strange dogs. I’m still getting used to the sounds of a city as compared to the concrete walls of our old house nestled safely in the quiet boring suburbs, where the only thing that happened was that one time when a lawnmower caught fine and burnt all the grass across the street from us. We hadn’t even heard the fire engines and only noticed on the walk to get the mail that our neighbors no longer had grass. At one point last night we looked out the study window to see an ambulance taking someone out on a stretcher from the apartment building across the street, at the same time someone else was delivering pizza.
